Mission
FUNJ Shrooming Company is an urban mushroom farm that provides people with delicious and sustainably cultivated mushrooms.
Our mission is to get delicious fungi onto people’s plates, but we also seek to be much more than that. FUNJ represents an exploration into our natural world. Among a backdrop of fads, frustrated foodies, and far-from-fresh produce, FUNJ promises to let curiosity lead the way and discover what hidden morsels there are to be found.
Goals
01. Grow Amazing mushrooms
—
Nature has created millions of fungi, and we only know around 120,000. So many new flavors, potential medicinal benefits, and uses beyond our imagination are hiding in our forests waiting to be discovered! We seek to be a beacon for adventuring into the magical world of mycology.
02. create ethical food systems
—
Sustainability should be at the core of any venture in life. We only have one world, we have to treat it, and each other, with love and compassion. We aim for nothing less than minimal harm and maximal environmental and social sustainability.
03. pUT AN eND TO “mycophobia”
—
In the US, we grow up being told most mushrooms are poisonous (except the ones on pizza). We commit to educating and connecting people with their local fungi so that more folks understand what all these crazy mushrooms are doing.
NOTE: Not every mushroom is toxic — though some are! Always read up and speak with experts before ingesting a wild mushroom.
History
Founder and owner Kevin started FUNJ Shrooming Company in 2019, out of his long-lived adoration for all things fungal. Since his grungy teenage days, he always loved exploring for whatever interesting fungi he might find in his suburban hometown. After graduating from the University of Vermont in 2018, he set off to find new ways we can live more sustainably.
Having developed a passion for cooking and food science in college, Kevin began studying food systems and their effect on the environment. The idea of a “circular economy” appealed to him, and he was constantly trying to think of ways to incorporate fungi into the sustainability movement. After all, fungi are some of earth’s best recyclers! Following a gig in craft brewing and some odd jobs, he decided to pursue something that checked all his personal boxes of food, environmental stewardship, and science: growing mushrooms.
